Capital of Finland, Helsinki is the vibrant center of the country. Set on the sea, the city is both colder and warmer than other parts of the country. For most visitors of Finland, Helsinki is the first stop on any visit. Several ferries connect Helsinki to other capitals, so it remains to best connected city in Finland, as well as an entry point further east.
The most famous building and primary landmark of Helsinki is the Helsinki Cathedral from the 1800s. Much of the city is laid around the coast and beyond is the popular island of Soumenlinna, the world’s most famous sea fortress. A market in front of the docks to the island is open during the morning and early day.
