Taroko Gorge (太魯閣國家公園)

I have been to Taroko twice and each time it has been brilliant and exhilarating. It isn’t the Grand Canyon, but it is a Gorge you can drive through. This monument was the last outposts for Taiwanese aboriginals as they fought both Qing Dynasty and Japanese Colonial rule. Roads twist and turn deep into the gorge, leading up into mountains towards Taichung (which is often closed).

We rented a scooter from Hualien which was somewhat of a difficulty and drove deep into the gorge and then went up. In the main town there is a temple where people often stop to eat.
