Lugang is a great historical city in central Taiwan. It was a major port during the Qing Dynasty, so you can see a lot Qing style homes all around the city. During Chinese New Year the city is pretty busy. It has a famous resident sky lantern artist as well as an enormous temple dedicated to Matsu. Instead of lingering on the main market street, break away to the amazing alley system which is lined with hundred year old homes that are still inhabited. There is also a VERY narrow alley nicknamed “booby alley” since it is so narrow men could not go through without inappropriately passing a woman.
You can easily visit Lugang from frequent busses leaving Taizhong.
